After the sensational late scratching of the favourite Super Cash at the barriers it was all bad news for the punters in the Alinghi Stakes 2016 on Caulfield Cup Day with the Matthew Smith-trained Palazzo Pubblico getting up for a big upset win.

All the pre-race money for this yearâs $120,000 Listed Crown Lager Alinghi Stakes (1100m) was on the Andrew Noblet-trained Written Tycoon four-year-old Super Cash.
Jockey Craig Williams however felt something was amiss with her heading from the mounting yard to the barriers for the set weights plus penalties clash.
A subsequent check saw her scratched at the vetâs advice and Flippant firmed into favouritism after the withdrawal of the original top fancy.
The substitute for the punters was only away okay from the gates and failed to feature throughout or in the finish for the filliesâ and maresâ feature.
One of the best out of the gates was the Lindsay Park-trained Miss Promiscuity, ridden by Dwayne Dunn coming off a win in the Gothic Stakes one race earlier aboard the John OâShea-trained Peacock.
She settled into second behind the pace-setter Aunty Mo who was left alone up front setting a decent speed up front facing the wind.
Third on the rails was the Clarry Conners-trained Aegean Sea and jockey Blake Shinn, while I Love It was improving to move into fourth during the run.
Aegean Sea led around the bend and once on the straight Flippant was trying to let loose down the outside, but didnât have the speed to reel them in.
There were some definite hard luck stories getting bumped in a traffic jam out the back, but getting all the favours was Smithâs Sydney raider Palazzo Pubblico.
The five-year-old daughter of Conatus hadnât raced since a second last (14th) at Eagle Farm during the winter when outclassed in the Group 1 Tattersallâs Tiara (1400m).
Off a couple of nice trials at home Smith headed south for her first-up run and jockey Steven Arnold gave her the perfect run with cover, saving her for a powerful late burst fresh.
Palazzo Pubblico ($31) at the big starting price swamped the field finishing too quickly for her rivals, coming with a swooping late run down the outside with all the momentum to defeat Aegean Sea ($15) by a head.
Finishing off the trifecta in third was Leon & Troy Corstensâ defending champion Vezalay ($7.50) who, first-up, just wasnât quite wound-up enough to go back-to-back in the Alinghi Stakes with improvement to come off the run.
Palazzo Pubblico meanwhile was fantastic fresh and her winning hoop Arnold was pleased with her resuming run in a good class field on one of the major Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival race days.
âSheâs quite fresh,â he said post-win.
âIt was critical I get a bit of cover and save her for one burst because sheâs first-up.
âI was confident if I got a bit of cover sheâd sprint well.
âSheâs obviously good fresh and sheâs been trialling really well.â
