Running as Doomben Cup Day Race 6 at 3:21pm (AEST), this yearâs $175,000 Group 2 Magic Millions The Roses (2000m) features a capacity field of Oaks hopes.
Sitting top of The Roses betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is the early market mover Ambience who has been heavily supported in from $7 to $4.60 for the win.
She jumps from a gun barrier (4) with James McDonald in the saddle on Saturday, the John OâShea-trained daughter of Street Cry last seen running second in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) in Sydney on April 9.
Ambience is a dual Oaks placegetter having also run third to Jameka at Flemington in the Springâs edition in Melbourne, but also has form over the shorter distance of The Roses (3-1-0-1).
Close second favourite for Saturday and top fancy in futures markets for the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 4 is the Bjorn Baker-trained Imposing Lass.
Sheâs drawn a nasty gate for Saturdayâs Group 2 feature (18 into 15), but is being kept safe in betting at $4.80 after her half-length Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) win a fortnight back.
The other major player in The Roses odds this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival at $5 is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained More Than Ready filly Falkenberg, another Gold Coast Bracelet graduate having run fourth beaten under two lengths.
So will the close top three in the markets get the job done on Saturday or is there value tipping an upset The Roses result from the likes of Team Snowdenâs other runner Self Esteem ($8.50) or the Chris Waller-trained Chandana ($9.50)?
1st
#1 Ambience ($4.60)
Ambience is the market mover and we think the money trail is worth following in this race. She gets things her way from the gate and McDonald knows her well having been aboard for her Crown Oaks third and ATC Oaks second last start in April. Sheâll improve in the Queensland Oaks up over 2400m, but has winning form at the 2000m (3-1-0-1), her only unplaced run at the distance being a Vinery Stud 10th two runs back. Tipping her to return to her Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) winning form in Melbourne from Derby Day last October.
2nd
#7 Dawnie Perfect ($21)
Big price for this Big Brown filly prepared by Clarry Conners, a dual Queensland Oaks winning trainer. She comes off a fifth in the Gold Coast Bracelet when defeated under four lengths and think sheâll appreciate getting the extra metres under her legs on Saturday. Her last run over 2000m was behind Ambience in the Wakeful Stakes, form we are expecting to stand up here. Sheâs had a few recent jockey changes but Kerrin McEvoy is aboard here from a decent gate and if she continues to improve she can surprise with a top three finish.
3rd
#3 Imposing Lass ($4.80)
Former favourite has eased out somewhat in the markets based on her wide alley. She has the consistency and class to overcome the barrier with the right ride from Jason Collett on Saturday however as the daughter of Makfi looks to extend her winning streak to five on the trot dating back to December. She won her first Black-Type in the Gold Coast Bracelet and rises in grade and distance again so this is her biggest test on way to the Oaks.
